Positive Play Academy FAQs

How is Positive Play different from Responsible Gambling?

Positive Play focuses on supporting all players to play moderately, whereas Responsible Gambling has more traditionally been more about focusing on risky players and warning players about the risks of excessive gambling. Players often think that Responsible Gambling is only about problem gambling. The Positive Play approach communicates what players do right and emphasises the benefits of positive play, players are encouraged to adopt beliefs and engage in behaviours that help to keep their play moderate and fun.

How can my organization benefit from using the Positive Play Scale?

The Positive Play Scale can be used in a survey to determine the level of positive beliefs and behaviors that your players exhibit. This means you can optimize your player support strategy by focusing on the areas that would benefit from most support (e.g., promoting Gambling Literacy) and identifying the player segments who need the most attention.

Does Positive Play only focus on the benefits of gambling?

No, whilst the approach is about promoting what positive play looks like, we still acknowledge that gambling can be harmful for some players. We just understand that most players benefit from positive support for playing moderately.

Is Positive Play just a slogan rather than a scientific approach?

No, whilst some consultants are using Positive Play language just because it has become a popular way to discuss responsible gambling, the real Positive Play approach is rooted in science.

Why is it important that there is science supporting Positive Play?

Our Positive Play approach is supported by research which has been published in high quality peer reviewed scientific journals. This means that you don’t have to just take our word for it, the evidence behind our approach has been scrutinized by independent experts in the field of gambling studies. Unfortunately, the success of Positive Play means that there have been some copycat services appearing that use Positive Play terminology but are not rooted in science, and therefore may not actually work as intended. However, as experienced researchers in this field our team only provides services that are backed by scientific evidence.

How can we use the Positive Play Scale to benchmark the success of our player support strategy?

By conducting an initial Positive Play Scale study with your players, you can identify their overall level of positive beliefs and behaviours. When you conduct the study again, you can see if their levels of Positive Play have increased, in what ways and by which player segment. Many of our clients run a Positive Play Scale study each year to monitor and document their progress over time.
