What is Positive Play?

Positive Play, a term first introduced in 2014 by our team in the research paper “Understanding Positive Play: An Exploration of Playing Experiences and Responsible Gambling Practices” (Wood and Griffiths 2014) highlights the beliefs and behaviors of players who experience no problems or concerns with their gambling.

That initial study focused on what healthy, enjoyable play looks like, helping us understand how players can keep their gambling low-risk and fun. This approach shows players what to do rather than what not to do, reflecting a key principle of persuasion: positive messages are far more motivating than negative ones.
